Strengthening Relationships: Overcome Disorganized Attachment with EMDR Therapy
Zuleyka Lopez Lisojo | LICSW
Personal relationships can feel like a minefield for many of us, especially if we discover that our childhood left us with a disorganized attachment style. Have you ever felt distrust in your relationships, starting to get close to someone only to then pull away? Maybe you think that person got close to you only to hurt you or take advantage of you. These perceptions and behaviors can be the consequence of an attachment style that began to develop in your childhood.
Let’s go deeper into this topic together, using a real client case whom we have supported therapeutically through therapy and professional coaching.

Introduction to Attachment Styles
During childhood, our interactions and the love we receive from our caregivers determine our attachment style, which can have an impact on our adult relationships. There are four attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized.
Each one has very specific characteristics that develop from the earliest years of life.
A Story of Disorganized Attachment
Today I am sharing the story of a client with a disorganized attachment style influenced by a childhood marked by rejection and abuse. Although she often wanted to create emotional bonds, her fear of rejection and her constant need for approval led her into self-sabotaging dynamics in her relationships.
The Healing Power of EMDR
EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has played a crucial role in her healing process. This technique helps reprocess traumatic memories, making it possible to move beyond deep wounds from the past. Through eye movements and other bilateral stimulation, it becomes possible to transform negative experiences into positive learning.
Conclusion: Spirituality and Healing
But there is a vital component that brings this healing journey together: spirituality. Believing in an eternal love, like the love that God offers, can be a powerful source of healing. Scripture reminds us that our worth does not depend on our past or our trauma.
What would change in your life if you believed that you are fully loved and accepted? Reflect on this as you consider the lasting impact these attachment styles have on your relationships.
